The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and was doing business in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Toto considered North America as a growth market for Washlet bidet seats and toilets, in contrast to its "base" markets of Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words to ensure that the future generation could be able to read them. However, many words were being replaced by foreign ones, such as dui from Bengali for verandah.

Origins

Toto's early history that began in 1917, mirrored Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the early years of its existence, the company made products to meet the demand for modern, contemporary urban housing. It was the first tunnel kiln in the country to continuously produce ceramics. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products of other manufacturers to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares as well as plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm’s global market share.

In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis to research and development of water-related household appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company employed the same just-in-time approach to its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a greater level of satisfaction of customers.

Toto continues to invent toilet technology. The most recent toilet features a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. Toto also makes use of recycled water in its production process and has a green procurement policy. Toto also produces bathtubs, faucets, and hand dryers with greater energy efficiency than typical models.

The first museum of the company opened in the year 2015 It has exhibits about Toto's iconic products and their development as well as its group companies (all that deal with ceramics) and the historical background of plumbing and products such as bath units and, in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum also has a bathroom that features the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.

Before the formation of Toto the members of the group did sessions for a variety of musicians. Boz Scaggs album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich and guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather and drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name as evocative as Asia one would think that the group would be prog queens and kings - but it's actually a fairly straightforward rock group. The band began as four members and released two albums that were self-titled in 1979 and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background, but their biggest success was in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a major blockbuster but not without its difficulties. The record companies put the band under pressure to deliver a hit single or they would rescind them. Toto was able to achieve this with the help from the smash hit "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience. Before joining the group, members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their distinctive sound has become the standard for  the '80s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.

The album begins hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write fantastic AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also features slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and the distorted AOR, which should appear completely unnatural, but actually works extremely well.

After Toto IV The band's fortunes turned for the worse. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career, and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. However, the band still managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992, Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album featuring a new singer, Simon Phillips.

David Paich's keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded an Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The studio album came out shortly after, and the group embarked on a world-wide tour to promote it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In  he has a good point , Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then and Now. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that limited his singing ability. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. This lineup, minus Howe who was occupied with Yes during that time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin.
